Party with the Cracker Boys

There was a Christmas boat parade in Ft. Pierce on Saturday night.  Lucky for us, we had a front row seat as the route went right by our slip at Cracker Boy.  There was also big party and pot luck here, and a "crab boil".  This crab boil was something new to me.  Basically it involves putting a bunch of blue crabs, shrimp, three kinds of sausage, red potatoes, onions, and cloves of garlic in a huge pot with seasonings and boiling the heck out of it. When it's done, the contents are strained and dumped onto a big plastic-covered table and the masses gather around to feast like a bunch of hungry crows on trash day.  There were over 30 people, elbow to elbow, around the table for the first boil.  I sat that round out to observe, take notes, and learn from the local pros:  1) use bottom of beer bottle to crush crab claws 2) Do not bite directly into the potatoes because they are extremely hot 3) the red sausage is very, very, spicy 4) wipe your hands on your shorts.  I dove in on the second round.  Ri, Wren, and Scott soon joined me.  We stuffed ourselves.  It was absolutely delicious!
Kiawah has a front row seat for the boat parade

Gifts from Cracker Boy Bill - what a sweet man!  I think this is where Santa really lives...
Today is Monday.  The car has been returned.  Phase III of our adventure has officially begun.  From here on, everywhere we go will be by water.  Future provisioning will be done on foot.  Kiawah is finally ready to leave Cracker Boy and begin motoring south on the ICW (inter coastal waterway) towards Palm Beach.  We'll spend as many days as it takes getting used to her and sailing her (finally!) while we wait for the perfect weather window to open so we can cross to the Bahamas.

We are thinking of you all back home, under a blanket of snow.  It hardly feels like Christmas here.  I am missing the smell of balsam.

  2. Hey, was that sunburn I saw on Scott's back? No fair!! We have been enduring below zero chills and are now bracing for another 12"+ of snow on top of the 12 down from the weekend. Perhaps we will actually see a White Christmas! The boat looks great. Lots of work, but in the sunshine can't be all bad. You must have goose-bumps getting so close to embarking on the 'putting miles behind you' portion of your adventure. I envy the crab boil - I know of them and would love to dive into one sometime. Listen, enjoy (like you have to be told) and don't worry about us - we can keep our beer cold on the front porch!

  4. Hello Frallards!
Scythe Supply is following you and what fun! Stephanie, you are a good writer.
I especially enjoyed the photos of Wren weeding and Steph applying. Any brush letterers doing transoms at Cracker Boy?
Scott, your help could be used with the skido tomorrow setting x-c tracks. You all are missed already in so many ways. The snow has been just perfect - coastal powder but things are changing out there now.
"The Emperor's New clothes" production at School last week was excellent but missed you, Riley & Wren. Siobhan and Roy were awesome.
The "Kiawah" looks like quite the vessel especially after time with Scott. Perry/Pembroke's new boat, The Rangely Row Boat is now safely in Sandra's barn and will be ready for a row with you 4 next summer.

We'll keep following the dots and the posts. Thank-you for taking us all along on this amazing adventure.
Very best to all of you,
    Carol

  5. Hi Wren! There is a storm going on and I am glad that it will not hit you because this storm is an ice storm and if it did hit you that would not be good because it would make your boat rock side to side! The power might even go out because when the wind starts to blow the tops of trees will break and cause a power outage and since we have my brother and his wife and my Oma a power outage would not be that fun.
